Mr Adam Rumian

Professional background:

Mr Rumian is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in the treatment of patients with problems of the shoulder and elbow. This includes the whole spectrum of modern minimally invasive, keyhole and arthroscopic techniques, shoulder and elbow replacements, joint resurfacing procedures, revision surgery and complex reconstruction.

He was a scholarship pupil at St Paul’s School in London, studied medicine at Cambridge University (Queens’ College) and completed his clinical training at Imperial School of Medicine, qualifying as a doctor in 1998. His specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery was on the highly regarded North-West Thames rotation in London, followed by extensive training in shoulder and elbow surgery and reconstruction. He was selected for a prestigious year-long advanced training fellowship working with one of the world’s leading surgeons, Professor Pascal Boileau, in Nice, France.  He was also awarded an MD higher research degree by the University of London for work on tendon biology.

He was subsequently appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Welwyn Garden City. He is the Deputy Clinical Director for Trauma and Orthopaedics and has been recognised with Clinical Excellence Awards. His private practice is based at the One Hatfield Hospital, Hatfield, Pinehill Hospital and Hitchin.

Clinical interests:

Shoulder conditions treated include: sports injuries, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tears, subacromial impingement, bursitis, calcific tendonitis, biceps tendon disorders, shoulder joint dislocations and instability, labral tears, SLAP lesions, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fractures and traumatic injuries, clavicle injuries, acromio-clavicular joint (ACJ) disruptions, ACJ arthritis.

Elbow conditions treated include: tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), ulnar nerve entrapment and neuropathy (cubital tunnel syndrome), fractures and dislocations, instability, ligament injuries, biceps tendon ruptures, loose bodies, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis.

Trauma conditions treated include: shoulder fractures and dislocations, clavicle fractures, acromioclavicular joint injuries, fractures of the humerus, elbow fractures and dislocations,

Academic interests:

In addition to his clinical practice, he has published several research papers, presented work at national and international conferences and has been awarded a MD Higher Research degree from the University of London. He is also responsible for teaching higher surgical trainees surgery for shoulder and elbow disorders and trauma and is a faculty member and lecturer on courses held to teach advanced surgical techniques.

Personal background:

Mr Rumian lives in Harpenden with his wife and three children. He spends most of his spare time with his family and enjoys golf, swimming, skiing and watching rugby.
